The IT Girls Guide To Surviving Fashion Week In Style

How to prep and what to pack for a whirlwind month in the fashion capitals.

Navigate Fashion Week like a blogger with our guide

Navigate Fashion Week like a blogger with our go-to guide

As any style-loving, IT girl will tell you, the real trick to surviving the chaos of Fashion Week all lies in expert preparation. Like an athlete training for a competition or Victoria’s Secret supermodel preparing for the big annual show, one must be thoroughly prepped to withstand the busy fashion month across the capitals.

Whether you are heading to NYC, London, Paris or Milan, the most famous month on the calendar is jam-packed with shows, appointments, backstage interviews, glitzy soirées – and the after-parties, of course!

The Packing: Quick Tips To Prepping Like A Pro

Once you have your schedule, try on outfits in advance (including the correct undergarments and accessories to go with each look) and take photos. This tactic will ensure you don’t over pack and will make getting dressed a whole lot quicker when you need to rush out the door for the first show of the day.

Make sure you get everything washed and dry-cleaned well in advance so that it arrives back in plenty of time for the trip.

Pack extra flat shoes to pop in your tote, especially if you plan on wearing heels to a show. Chances are the show will run late, and you will need to get to the next slot, which is no easy feat in stilettos.

Make a suitcase checklist on your phone, which you can update as you go along. Jot down everything you will need, from your toothbrush to phone charger, no matter how small – these are often the things we forget.

A busy show-packed agenda makes eating regularly and healthily a whole lot harder, so stick to a decent meal plan ahead of Fashion Week and pack plenty of nutritious snacks, such as nut bars, quinoa chips and protein powders, in your suitcase. Once you have arrived in your location, you can stock up on fresh fruit and veggies to store in your hotel minibar fridge.

Flower power

Florals are no longer synonymous with summer – they can be worn all year round, especially thanks to Dubai’s balmy winter temperatures. From Prada to Preen, flower print was splashed across the catwalks and it is continuing to grow on us. To get the look, try Ted Baker for stunning floral maxi-dresses with slashes of red to tick the lady in red fashion box too.

There was some serious flower power at designer Tadashi Shoji’s collection – for a high street comparison try Ted Baker’s Kytot floral pleated maxi-dress in navy at 1,275 AED

Top of the blocks

The best way to make your look pop is with a bit of clever colour blocking. Luckily the high street stores offer lots of top choices, so simply pick your favourite colour and off you go. BCBGMAXAZRIA obviously took inspiration from the Milan Fashion Week, making the brand Dubai’s place to go for breezy, asymmetric numbers. Colour blocks look best with a white shirt for the park or the beach, then take them back to black (a la the catwalk) after dark. Bellissimo!

Take inspiration from hot label Anteprima and shop the trend at BCBGMAXAZRIA, where the Christy Midi-length colour block skirt is 941 AED

What a furore!

Things are getting hairy this season, with faux fur appearing in every rainbow shade on and off the catwalk. Style steal the look from Milan’s Fashion Week at Bershka. Available at City Centre Mirdif, their faux fur mustard sweater is bound to be a favourite of the style set this winter. Furry nice!

Those taking inspiration from Milan’s faux fur style should look out for Bershka’s faux fur sweater in stylish mustard at 129 AED

The Best Crimson tide Ladies Apparel for this Season

Celebs are on red alert this season – and here’s our pick of the best fiery fashion in Dubai.

As well as picking up the ‘best actress’ award at the recent Emmy’s, Nicole Kidman definitely should have scooped best dressed in this season’s hottest colour. If top-to-toe red is a little fierce for your fashion tastes, we’ve picked out some safer scarlet fashion choices for you. Because this is one shade that’s going to be smoking all season. Remember you ‘red’ it here first!

Nicole Kidman is a vision in red

Red-hot knit

A slouchy red knit is one way to embrace autumn/winter’s fiery trend. Team it with a denim of midi length skirt (tomato red if you dare) for a nod to the 70s style of the season. If you can’t stretch to Victoria Beckham, Massimo Dutti has a range of red knits to keep you cosy – and on-trend.

Getting Shirty

Sheer shirts are a more weather friendly way to make sure your friends and family are seeing red this season. Spotted outside Christopher Kane, stylist and influencer Natasha Goldenberg rocked the trend, teaming it with the check print to maximize her style credentials. Fashionistas looking to shop the trend should head to Maje, who have a multi-tasking sheer shirt with a yolk of frills across the chest to pay homage to folk chic at the same time while staying red alert.

99 Red Balloons

When it comes to high fashion, sometimes only a dress will do – and this full-skirted cocoon skirt from Cos is a definite showstopper. Nipped in at the waist, before ballooning out into a flattering full skirt that ends just below the knee, this piece is lightweight enough to take you through the season back in the summer again. Now that’s what we call red hot!

In our eyes supermodel Kendall Jenner can’t step a foot out of style. As the face of Estée Lauder, Fendi and La Perla (to name just a few), the trend-making runway queen has certainly picked up a trick or two for her personal wardrobe.

One of the youngest members of the Kardashian/Jenner clan, the 21-year-old beauty recently displayed her fashion credentials while aboard a luxury boat in Cannes, France. The epitome of nautical chic, Kendall opted for high-waisted white trousers teamed with a Breton striped top, black sunnies, and cat-eye shades.

Hair How-To: New Season Locks

The Spring trends to try at home and our insider tricks of the trade you need to know now

A model backstage at Anna Sui Ready to Wear Spring Summer 2017 fashion show

The Beehive

Gigi Hadid at the Anna Sui Spring/Summer 2017 show in New York City, wearing a beehive hairstyle

Over at the Anna Sui Spring/Summer 2017 show in New York City, the models took to the runway rocking retro beehive bouffants.

The trick to achieving this look at home is all down to backcombing and a holding spray.

  • Voluminous beehives work best on day-hold locks as the hair has more texture to it than silky strands, so you can forgo the fresh blow-dry.

  • Concentrating on your crown, section hair backwards before taking a comb and brushing upwards towards your scalp - the aim is to create a matted look, which you can then gently smooth over the top with a comb.

  • Pull back two front sections with bobby pins and spritz generously with hairspray.

Pro tip: For maximum volume, go easy on the conditioner. Just apply a small amount to the ends before rinsing and avoid the crown altogether.

Straight On

Shiny straight hair at Victoria Beckham’s Runway Show in New York City

For Spring/Summer 2017, Victoria Beckham sent her girls down the runway with super sleek straight locks. To top off the modern look, hair was parted neatly down the middle and smoothed with a high gloss serum.

  • Get this polished look by blow-drying hair with a large paddle brush followed by a runover with flat irons.

  • Use a fine-tooth comb to divide your parting into the centre and finish with a drop of moisture-rich serum or balm.

Pro tip: To tame flyaways, spritz a little hair spray onto a clean toothbrush and softy brush down.

How To Dress Like…Sienna Miller

A young Sienna Miller first came onto the scene in 2004 with roles in two hit British films, Layer Cake and Alfie starring opposite Jude Law – who she would later go on to to become romantically involved with.

The beautiful young couple made waves in the press, largely due to Sienna’s innate sense of style. She is often credited with resurrecting the boho-chic fashion trend movement throughout the 2000s - think floppy hats, prairie skirts and crochet gilets with low-slung leather belts and pirate boots.

In the years that followed, Sienna was featured on the covers of glossy magazines across the world, including both British and American Vogue, in addition to fronting campaigns for Hugo Boss and Burberry.

While the blonde actress’s relationship with Jude ended in 2006 (although the pair later rekindled their romance in 2009 only to break up again in 2011), her professional career took off with roles in Factory Girl, Interview and The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, followed by The Edge of Love opposite Keira Knightley.

In recent years, Sienna has been seen in a slew of critically acclaimed box office hits including Foxcatcher and Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, as well as Burnt, alongside Bradley Cooper, and The Lost City of Z. Her next film will see her star opposite Ben Affleck and Zoe Saldana in the hotly anticipated crime drama Live By Night, set for release in January 2017.

Nowadays the 34-year-old mother-of-one (Sienna gave birth to her daughter Marlowe with ex-fiancé actor Tom Sturridge in 2012) takes a more streamlined approach to her wardrobe, as seen just a few weeks ago, when Sienna attended an event for women in film in New York City.

The British beauty looked polished in leather shorts, a white tee and tights topped off with a checked red tweed jacket.

Here, we show you how to get her on-trend look from the Middle East’s leading shopping malls.

How To Dress Like Selena Gomez

  • Closet Confidential 00

With a colossal 90 million fans eagerly awaiting her daily photo updates, it’s little wonder why Selena Gomez is the most followed person on social media. There’s the six studio albums, more smash hits than we can count on both hands and the very high profile romance with Justin Bieber.

Selena stepped into the spotlight at the tender age of seven joining the cast of Barney & Friends. The budding actress soon rose to fame after landing the leading role in the Disney channel series Wizards of Waverly Place.

In the subsequent years, the busy 23-year-old has also starred in a slew of films such as Spring Breakers, Monte Carlo and Hotel Transylvania.

But her true success lies in the stream of megahit songs, which include Same Old Love, Good For You, Hands To Myself, Come & Get It and most recently, Kill Em With Kindness – all of which has amassed hundreds of millions of downloads and video views on Youtube.

The American beauty is currently on her worldwide Revival tour with a stop in Dubai on the map at the Autism Rocks Arena on November 18th.

Selena has also made waves in the fashion and beauty industry, covering countless glossy fashion magazines, including Vogue, W and Elle, as well as campaigns for hair powerhouse, Pantene.

Before heading off on her big tour earlier this summer, the superstar was snapped at an event in Los Angeles. Pairing her blue jeans with a rleaxed white tank, Selena topped off the look with a bright yellow coat and camel coloured heels.

Here, we show you how to get her chic look for less from the Middle East’s leading shopping malls.

How To Dress Like Rihanna

  • Be it on or off the stage, Rihanna is never one to shy away from over-the-top outfits and hard-to-try trends.

From a curve-hugging transparent sheath decked with thousands of crystals, to a traffic-stopping neon green fur coat teamed with thigh-high vinyl boots, and who could forget about the couture yellow-caped gown complete with a cascading train she wore to last year’s prestigious Met Gala – it’s official, nobody nails show-stopping style quite like Rihanna.

While the 28-year-old’s standout wardrobe may not be to everyone’s taste (how many woman can pull off a fluffy pink mink minidress with matching bobby socks?), we have to hand it to RiRi, she is definitely a fearless fashionista.

Famous for her smash hit beats Diamonds, Umbrella, We Found Love and Stay (to name just a few), a few weeks ago the Barbadian singer and songwriter released a powerful ballad titled Sledgehammer for the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack.

Showing off her fashion IT girl status, Rihanna recently stepped out for a meeting in Soho, New York, looking sleek and sophisticated. Wearing a classic little black dress topped off with a tailored coat, the singer/songwriter jazzed up her ensemble with quirky white heels and gold space-age inspired shades.

Here, we show you how to get her edgy look from the Middle East’s leading shopping malls.

Sweet Dreams Interior buys for the bedroom

  • Sweet Dreams Home 01

We believe your bedroom should be a personal sanctuary. A place to switch off from the rest of the world and drift off into a comfortable snooze.

While we’re all for colourful ornaments, bright art and a mishmash of printed pillows, when it comes to your bedroom, it’s usually best to keep the decor simple and clean. The fewer items in the room to distract you while you try to sleep, the better.

The same applies to wall and colour palettes – opt for muted shades of grey, beige and white, which have been proven to help improve sleep patterns.

The shopping malls in the Middle East are bursting with décor finds to fill your bedroom, from luxurious interior stores such as The One, Villeroy & Boch and Harvey Nichols Dubai, to more affordable buys found in Zara Home, Crate & Barrel Dubai and Home Centre.

Scroll down to discover a few of our favourite small luxuries to turn your bedroom into the ultimate slumber zone now…

  • Sweet Dreams Home 02

Jacquard rug, Zara Home, visit Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Deira, City Centre Bahrain and City Centre Muscat

Décor tip: Throw in cosy touches such as a vase of fresh flowers, your favourite framed photos and soft rugs for either side of your bed.

  • Sweet Dreams Home 03

Duvet cover set, Crate & Barrel, visit Mall of the Emirates and City Centre Mirdif

Décor tip: Create your own mini hotel room at home by investing in good quality bedding. While there is no need to spend thousands of dirhams, do look for the highest thread count possible – these are usually the softest sheets and will last for many years to come.

  • Sweet Dreams Home 04

Antique-style lamp, Zara Home, visit Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Deira, City Centre Bahrain and City Centre Muscat

    Décor tip:
Lighting is key to creating a relaxing ambiance. Look for warm, yellow-toned lamps and scented candles to set the vibe.
